It was five full years from the day
Simon St. Claire went away for a life of devotion and prayer
When outside the cloister, down by the river
Lady Catherine discovered him there
Now he’d given charge of Catherine
To good Spencer Hamilton, a loyal and trustworthy kind
And he gave Catherine all he could
But the sad lady never would keep her first love from haunting her mind

So late on that summer night
She crept out in the moonlight and passed through the village unseen
And by sunrise she found the place
Where Simon turned to see her face glowing like an angelic dream

Simon St. Claire realized he loved her so faithful and strong
And he remembered his solemn vow
But decided that to disavow such a strong love would surely be wrong
