lyrics

Midnight Apparitions

Daddy was the preacher down in our hometown
When I was eleven the church burned down
Daddy said it was a symbol of things to come
Ever since then all he did was hide
Shut all the windows and locked himself inside
I used to ask him why he lived like his days were done

He said, “Late at night, I deal with midnight apparitions
Rustles in the bushes, dark superstitions
I don’t really believe in freedom”

Daddy was the preacher down in our hometown
People said he was the finest around
Now they say they always knew it was a matter of time
Who burned the church down? Satan, God or man?
Was Daddy saved now or was Daddy damned?
Such are the questions running through my uncertain mind

He said, “Late at night, I deal with midnight apparitions
Voyeurs in the window, lingering suspicions
I don’t really believe in freedom”

Daddy was the preacher down in our hometown
Now he’s buried at the old memorial ground
Up on the hill where the setting sun is dark and red
And late at night with all the windows shut tight
I close my eyes and see the church burning bright
And Daddy’s words start echoing through my head

Late at night I deal with midnight apparitions
Rustles in the bushes, dark superstitions
I don’t really believe in freedom

Late at night I deal with midnight apparitions
Voyeurs in the window, lingering suspicions
I don’t really believe in freedom
